Review of the Tivoli Audio Model Three Clock Radio

Tivoli Audio is a company that makes quality table radios and other audio products. Most of its products are very minimalist in design, such as the Model Three clock radio. I’ll explain to you why the Model Three radio is a great radio for virtually any room in your home or office.

Let’s talk about the radio’s design first. It is made of a real wood cabinet and overall has an appealing “retro” look to it. It is available in several colors and types of wood. One of the first things that one notices is that there are no digital displays and very few buttons or dials. The Model Three (as with most of Tivoli’s other radios) is completely analog, and designed to be very simple to use.

The Model Three allows you to play music from several sources. For starters, has an AM/FM radio tuner built in…after all, it wouldn’t be a table radio without the tuner, would it? The tuner picks up a variety of stations very well with its analog tuner. Additionally, there is an auxiliary input that allows you to play music from an iPod, MP3 player, CD player, or virtually any other device with a headphone jack. There’s even a “mix” input, which allows playback of sound from another device in addition to the AM/FM or auxiliary. For example, you can play sound from your computer while you listen to the radio.

Now we’ll talk about the unit’s alarm clock functionality. As with the unit’s radio tuner, the alarm clock is also completely analog. There’s a dial that you can use to set the time on the analog clock that you wish to wake at. You simply turn the radio on, set the time you wish, hit the “alarm on” button, and you’re ready to go; there’s also a 20-minute sleep timer to allow you to fall asleep with your music on. Because of the design of the dial, the time you wake up may end up being a couple of minutes off. However, any drawbacks are made up for by the sheer simplicity of the Model Three’s alarm clock mechanism.

How does it sound? One could describe the Model Three’s sound as very rich and warm; any genre of music or spoken word will sound great. Its sound will easily be loud enough to fill almost any room in a home or office. All things considered, the sound is certainly impressive for such a small unit. You can’t expect extremely low, thumping bass (if that’s your thing) from such a small unit…however, Tivoli does sell the “Model Subwoofer” if you want better bass. And remember that there is only one speaker in the Model Three…but one can purchase an external right-channel speaker from Tivoli for stereo sound. I have one attached to mine and would say it is certainly worth it.

The Model Three’s retail price is 9. It’s a bit expensive, but it’s worth it. And if you look around online, you can likely find one for a good bit cheaper. Overall, with the Model Three you get incredible sound quality, great minimalist design, and ease of use that few other radios on the market provide.

My issues with animal crackers and my super tight new alarm clock. :]

With the introduction of the iHome iH5 in 2005 (my first iPod clock radio), the iHome brand has proven its worth to the market through its durability and ease of use. Recently, the company released its 2010 model, the iP90. My speedy purchase of the clock radio has provided both an exceptional way of starting my day as well as an end all review for those looking to purchase an iHome clock radio. iHome has ditched the ridged surface of the clock in lieu of a sleek and modern look which makes it very ascetically pleasing at your bedside. I was however happy they kept the two rows of buttons used for adjusting the sleep time, time, date, alarm settings, and standard music selection options. A few functional changes as well as some improvements to its sound quality have been made, discussed in detail below, but as for its overall performance and simplicity, iHome has knocked this one out of the park.

The most notable features which have been added since the iH5 include a larger display screen and buttons which illuminate, but darken during “snooze”. Also, a button on the rear of the alarm clock has been added to quickly sync the time and date from your iPod or iphone. Existing features include the obvious AM/FM radio, a universal dock which works for all ipods and iphones, dual alarm clock settings for separate wake times which can be set for everyday, weekdays, or weekends only, and finally, a remote to manage all your iHome needs from across the room. As in the previous iH5 system, the iP90 features both wall power and a AA battery back up.

I was pleasantly surprised that iHome set the MSRP for the iP90 at only 0. For what I have paid in the past, this alarm clock surpasses all expectations of sound, functionality, and overall appeal. The sound quality on this beast only adds to its superiority. The iHome iP90 system was updated with larger speakers, most noticeable improving its bass quality but also allowing for higher highs and lower lows. When all is said and done, the sound quality of the iHome iP90 blows the iH5 out of the water. Think of the sound improvements like moving from cassettes to CD’s.

Many different types of clocks can be radio controlled, such as alarm clocks, wall clocks, mantel clocks, battery operated clocks and even wristwatches. If all clocks in your house are radio controlled, you will no longer have the annoying discrepancies between them, such as when the clock in the kitchen is five minutes faster than the one in your bedroom! There is never any guessing or resetting with a radio controlled clock, you can always be sure that you have the accurate time.

So if you struggle with remembering to reset your clocks in the spring and autumn, or you simply want to be assured that you have the accurate time, you might consider switching your household over to radio controlled clocks. I want to say that this product conveniently doubles up as a charging device, allowing you to charge a maximum of two gadgets at the same time. Just plug in your mobile phone and another USB device or two of each before you turn in for the night, and your gadgets will be as powered up as you are in the morning when you wake up.

Low ipod volume? wifi radio hard to use? No dvd player? I dont know what this user is talking about. To begin with the unit does not come with a dvd player, the volume is lound and crisp and while the radio takes a little getting used to it works fine. My biggest issue is the fact that I was not able to use my ipod itouch 2nd generation. I was able to use my first generation itouch. All in all this unit is well worth the price.

The radio is excellent. Control of the alarm volume, from minimal to violently loud, is perfect. I was amazed at the accessability and variety of internet radio. The product came quickly and as described by the seller. Their is high end distortion (minimally) as extreme volumes, but considering the price and size this is an excellent unit.
