Specialist equipment and adaptations can make it much easier for you to live independently in your own home. The equipment available ranges from large equipment like stairlifts and hoists to smaller gadgets designed for people with specific disabilities.

Large Items or Permanent Fixtures

If you are physically disabled, and especially if you are a wheelchair user, you may need to get equipment and have permanent fixtures installed at home so that you can live there independently.

Examples of equipment and adaptations include:

stair lifts ceiling hoists powered or manual height-adjustable beds powered leg-lifters for people who have difficulty lifting their legs into bed

You may also need to have adaptation work done in your home – for example, having doorways widened or a ramp installed.

Everyday items to make life easier

A wide range of gadgets and devices are available that make everyday tasks easier for people with specific disabilities. Some examples are:

clamps and holders to keep jars stable so they can be opened with one hand talking kitchen scales for people who are blind or visually impaired alarm clocks that vibrate under the pillow for deaf and hearing impaired people kettle tippers for people who have limited arm strength or restricted movement devices that remind people with memory loss or learning disabilities to do a daily task, for example taking a pill

You may have to pay for the equipment yourself. If a piece of equipment will meet a need the local council has assessed you as having, you can use your direct payments to pay for or towards it.

The Disabled Living Foundation has a large range of factsheets, including a number of factsheets concerning equipment for use about the home.

Telecare and personal alarm systems

Being able to summon help immediately in an emergency is often an important consideration for disabled people wanting to live independently at home. A personal alarm system could be the answer.

Personal alarm systems can take many forms. Some depend on someone to be nearby – for example in another room or next door.

Telecare alarms, known as community alarm services, are very useful for people who live alone. They work through a base unit in your home, which is connected to your phone line. By pressing a button on the unit or on a pendant that you wear around your neck, you are connected with an operator who can arrange the help you need.

Some telecare alarms have movement sensors that can detect if someone has fallen and cannot get up, or leaves a certain area. Those alarms will be activated automatically, so the person does not need to do anything to summon help.

The Disabled Living Foundation factsheet ‘Choosing a personal alarm system’ may help you decide what kind of personal alarm system, if any, is right for you.

Telecare devices that can detect smoke, water flooding, gas leaks, room temperature and more are also available. Many of these can be particularly useful for forgetful people.

The Disabled Living Foundation factsheet ‘Choosing equipment to maintain safety and independence at home (introducing telecare)’ has plenty of useful advice.

Additionally, the Disabled Living Foundation’s ‘Living made easy’ website has a section about telecare. It has free, impartial information about telecare generally as well as about telecare products available in the UK.

IPod Docks: Beginning Your Day with Your Tune

Waking up early in the morning can become a bad experience because of the annoying buzzer of our alarm clocks. But this can change with the use of a new generation alarm clocks. Today’s generation is living alongside a rapidly developing technological environment. Teenage life is nowadays filled up with the usage of gizmos and among them, one is the iPod.

Many conventional docking stations for iPods are already available in the market. Now a new style of docking station with an integrated alarm clock that can augment your music experience and change the way you wake up in the morning is also available. Most of us require the usage of an alarm clock to make us rise from bed at proper time and get ready for our daily schedule. Getting up to the tune of your favorite music can make it a good start for the day. These docks can be set to play selected playlists or random songs from the iPods memory. For those who are not able to wake up unless they hear the buzzer, these docks also provide the option to wake you up using the regular buzzer.

These docks also provide many varieties of add-ons like time projection that projects the current time on a ceiling or a wall. This eases the problem of trying to look at the time on the small screen. Other attachments like a vibrating attachment that can be put under the mattress or a pillow and can wake you up. Some of these docks also provide small screens for video output. Other attachments like dual docking points are also available which allows you to attach two iPods to the docking station.

Other than the basic features of playing your music and showing you time, these docks also charge the batteries of your devices when they are at idle state. These docking stations are also available in varying number of designs that make these devices an added bonus to the overall style of your room whether on the study table or besides your bed.

It doesn’t matter the way you use these docks because either way, they provide you the freedom and give you control over the way you wake up in the morning

IPod dock radios are the latest addition among alarm clocks that are
available in the market. Alarmclockradiostore.com is an online shop that sells iPod docks of a variety of styles.

Singing the Sad Blues ? Practical Advice on How to Stay Bright This Winter

For increasing numbers of us, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a spectre on the horizon – if it has not caught up with us already. Many people already suffer from SAD – which is a strong varient of the ‘Winter Blues’ – and it is this time of year that its effects can be most prominent. With this in mind it is important to know that there are many options available for treatment of SAD, including treatment without medication. If you think that you suffer from SAD, taking the steps below can reduce your symptoms and help you to see the bright side once more.

Increase your light intake –

The reduction in our light-levels brings about a decrease in seratonin, a chemical secreted from our Central Nervous System that helps to boost our mood. The ensuing feelings of sadness are therefore attributed to a loss of light. Taking a walk during the brightest part of the day for at least thirty minutes, or using devices such as sunrise alarm clocks for a similar duration can help to relieve these symptoms.

Exercise –

The feeling of satisfaction that we experience after exercise is also down to serotonin. Scientific studies have shown that serotonin levels are raised for a number of days post-exercise, so regular exercise can keep serotonin levels up. This is the beginning of a positive circle, as this feel-good factor that comes with regular exercise continues with the health benefits that physical activity brings.

Diet –

A decrease in serotonin can harbour a temptation to eat ‘comfort foods’, which can often be higher in sugar, fat and carbohydrates. It is imperative that you eat as much fruit and vegetables as possible, and as wide a variety of colours as is practicable to maximize your intake of antioxidants and vitamins. Spices such as fenugreek, fennel, pepper and mustard seeds are also an excellent source of vital minerals and can help boost the immune system. Keeping warm and healthy also helps guard against infection. As we get sick, we naturally feel worse, both physically and mentally.

Relaxation –

There are many forms of stress, which can hamper the production of serotonin. Waking early and working late – traveling to and from in the darkness – heaps unseen pressure on both mind and spirit. Time to yourself is one thing that many of us lack, so during these long, dark months we must make every effort to give ourselves a chance to recouperate. This can be from a short walk, a bath, reading a good book or simply listening to your favourite music, anything that allows you to forget – albeit momentarily – about stresses of work and worsening weather.

The above are simple, practical methods with which to defend against SAD. Slight changes in lifestyle can bring about the most momentous change in wellbeing and these lifestyle changes are not necessarily exclusive to sufferers of SAD. More light, a better diet, regular exercise and time to relax are things that each of us can benefit from to give ourselves a better mind, a better heart and a better life.

Finding the Right Balance in Life

The last thirty years have seen major changes in the way we live and work in the U.K. One of the most obvious being the increase in numbers of women in employment, particularly mothers with young children. At the turn of this century the number of women of working age that were in employment stood at 70%, an increase of 10% since 1979. Improved wage opportunities have been an important factor in this increase in employment of married women, and an increasingly hectic lifestyle means it is unsurprising that more and more women of all ages and skills are finding themselves in work.

Recently there has been a dramatic increase in flexible and part-time working. In 2007 the proportion of workplaces where some staff work from home had increased from 16% to 32%. Flexi-time, term-time and job sharing have also increased. This further redirection of employment patterns can be interpreted as an attempt by employees to find greater success in the way that they balance work responsibilities and family life.

This balance is integral to our happiness. Overwork, particularly during the winter months, can lead to heightened levels of stress and can even cause depression. Women are also more likely to suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), with females accounting for 80% of recorded cases of SAD in the U.K. SAD has only been a recognized illness since the early 1980’s, its increase coinciding with the increase in female employment. It is possible to draw a correlation between the two – that increased work, pressure and stress has led to increased susceptibility amongst women to illness or psychological trauma such as that caused by SAD.

It is important to realize that the right balance can be found not by pushing harder, but by making a few small adjustments to our daily routine. A stressful schedule does not have to be wrestled with alone, and there are small ways in which the stress can be alleviated. Most notable of these is through using devices such as the daylight alarm clock, which synthesizes the dawning of sunlight. Studies have shown that with as little as thirty minutes exposure per day, the effects of SAD can be confronted. The pineal gland is a light-sensitive organ situated in the base of the skull and is responsible for the secretion of melatonin. Once darkness falls, melatonin is secreted making us feel drowsy. The secretion of this hormone is also oppositely proportional to secretion of serotonin – the “active” hormone – which is responsible for uplifts in mood.

Stresses caused by increased pressures from all walks of life exacerbate these hormonal processes, so by increasing the amount of light that we take in we relieve some of this internal pressure, allowing us greater opportunity to take on external pressures. When considering that such a short time spent (from thirty minutes per day depending on the light intensity emitted from the device) can provide such a huge emotional and psychological benefit it is little wonder that more of us are seeing the light and finding that right balance.

Short-term Happiness is No Substitute for Long-term Health

As the clocks go back, we are all faced head-on by the looming prospect of a long, dark winter. The changing seasons have a variety of effects from person to person, whilst even the most exuberant of us may well feel disheartened by the gloom that lies ahead. Winter holidays – “escapes to the sun” – are big business during the winter months, with many of us leaving our shores behind for warmer climes.

However, not all of us can do the same. Whether it is through high cost or work or family commitments, many of us are stuck in the U.K. with the worsening weather. Left behind, there is a temptation to allow pessimism to overcome us and in such an environment it is no surprise that we search for other easier, cheaper ways to achieve the feeling of brightness that a winter holiday brings.

One of the most popular methods is visiting tanning salons to use sun beds, making us appear sun-kissed on the outside. This pleasing aesthetic gives rise to feelings of achievement and wellbeing, but this is only a short-term solution.

Continued use of sun beds sustains the warm glow of tan, but the fact is that one trip to a tanning salon can expose an average person in the U.K. to more UV rays (the harmful rays emitted by the sun) than we are used to in a year. The veneer of the tan is hiding deeper damage that will make the skin appear older. The effects of old age are hastened – blemished skin that is wrinkly and tough – the result of which is that the fading of the tan unmasks the skin damage that lies beneath.

Even this is not the worst-case scenario, for the link between sun beds and skin cancer are well documented. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.K., particularly in England and Wales where there are over 60,000 new cases reported each year. 15% of these cases are diagnosed as malignant melanoma, the most dangerous kind of skin cancer – a 100% increase since 1992.

The high level of sun bed use in the U.K. can certainly be attributed to a psychological feeling of sadness. The short-term relief from this that we accomplish from sun bed use is as artificial as the tan itself. Soon, this positive feeling abates and with depressing weather forecasts worsening daily the temptation to head back to the tanning salon is almost impossible to resist. The solution, however, lies in the mind. This sadness is actually due to a decrease in the production of serotonin in the brain, the chemical that is responsible for regulating our mood. Therefore what we require is not the outward appearance of having spent time in the sun, but the inward feeling of it. This can be achieved through the use of devices such as the sunrise alarm clock, which emits light to aid the production of serotonin. These devices produce far less ultraviolet light than daylight, so although they will not give you a tan they are much safer to use when considering how to tackle the “winter blues”. After all, for long-term happiness the most important thing to safeguard is our health.

Review of the Tivoli Audio Model Three Clock Radio

Tivoli Audio is a company that makes quality table radios and other audio products. Most of its products are very minimalist in design, such as the Model Three clock radio. I’ll explain to you why the Model Three radio is a great radio for virtually any room in your home or office.

Let’s talk about the radio’s design first. It is made of a real wood cabinet and overall has an appealing “retro” look to it. It is available in several colors and types of wood. One of the first things that one notices is that there are no digital displays and very few buttons or dials. The Model Three (as with most of Tivoli’s other radios) is completely analog, and designed to be very simple to use.

The Model Three allows you to play music from several sources. For starters, has an AM/FM radio tuner built in…after all, it wouldn’t be a table radio without the tuner, would it? The tuner picks up a variety of stations very well with its analog tuner. Additionally, there is an auxiliary input that allows you to play music from an iPod, MP3 player, CD player, or virtually any other device with a headphone jack. There’s even a “mix” input, which allows playback of sound from another device in addition to the AM/FM or auxiliary. For example, you can play sound from your computer while you listen to the radio.

Now we’ll talk about the unit’s alarm clock functionality. As with the unit’s radio tuner, the alarm clock is also completely analog. There’s a dial that you can use to set the time on the analog clock that you wish to wake at. You simply turn the radio on, set the time you wish, hit the “alarm on” button, and you’re ready to go; there’s also a 20-minute sleep timer to allow you to fall asleep with your music on. Because of the design of the dial, the time you wake up may end up being a couple of minutes off. However, any drawbacks are made up for by the sheer simplicity of the Model Three’s alarm clock mechanism.

How does it sound? One could describe the Model Three’s sound as very rich and warm; any genre of music or spoken word will sound great. Its sound will easily be loud enough to fill almost any room in a home or office. All things considered, the sound is certainly impressive for such a small unit. You can’t expect extremely low, thumping bass (if that’s your thing) from such a small unit…however, Tivoli does sell the “Model Subwoofer” if you want better bass. And remember that there is only one speaker in the Model Three…but one can purchase an external right-channel speaker from Tivoli for stereo sound. I have one attached to mine and would say it is certainly worth it.

The Model Three’s retail price is 9. It’s a bit expensive, but it’s worth it. And if you look around online, you can likely find one for a good bit cheaper. Overall, with the Model Three you get incredible sound quality, great minimalist design, and ease of use that few other radios on the market provide.

Problems With Clock Radios?

Sometimes alarm clock radios break down. However, we can take the time to repair them ourselves. The following is what to do to repair them.

1. Check the power at the outlet, and make sure the power is on.

2. Check the pointer. Some household radios use a station frequency pointer mounted on a dial cord that is moved by a small wheel on the side of the clock radio. Other household radios use a digital frequency readout that cannot be adjusted.

3. If the sound is fuzzy, disassemble the unit and locate the volume control. Spray electrical contact cleaner into the control and rotate or slide the control several times to lubricate the mechanism.

4. Replace a damaged or broken antenna.

Most modern clock radios are built on printed circuit boards that can only be repaired by trained technicians. Some of the tools you may need are screwdrivers, wrenches, electronic control cleaner, denatural alcohol, soldering iron and solder.

Reset Dial Pointer

1. Turn on radio. Find a strong radio signal, listen to the frequency.

2. Use a piece of tape or grease pencil to mark the dial where the pointer should be for that frequency.

3. Unplug the receiver and open the housing. There are usually two to four screws in the underside of the radio.

4. Inspect the pointer mechanism for problems, such as a cord that came off at the end rollers, or a break in the cord. Replace the broken cord or repair it.

5. Loosen the spring clips Move the pointer along the dial cord until the station being received lines up with the tape or mark on the dial.

6.Tighten the clips on the cord. Make sure you do not move the pointer.

7. Plug the radio in and verify that the dial pointer reads correctly.

Replacing External Antenna

1. Loosen the antenna screw.

2. If there is no exterior screw, open the radio and access the antenna base.

Replacing an Internal Antenna

1. Unplug the receiver and open the housing.

2. Find and remove the internal antenna, of the internal base of the external antenna.

3. Inspect the wires wound around the antenna for serious damage. Make sure the antenna is firmly plugged into the main circuit board. If the antenna is damaged, replace it or attempt to repair the antenna, or replace the radio as a unit.

Clean Electronic Components

1. Unplug the receiver and open the housing.

2. Use canned air to blow dust from components, including any power cords and speaker jacks.

3. Use electrical contact cleaner, or a cotton swab dipped in dentured alcohol to clean electronic components.

4. If you find broken components on a circuit board, replace the circuit board. Before purchasing a circuit board, you can use a soldering iron and electronic solder to attempt a repair.

Now you have repaired the clock radio yourself.

Do Wall Clocks Last?

To choose an alarm clock radio that would help your child get up in the mornings would be to have your child select it. This radio should have numbers that are big and easy to read. It would help if it had a light and a snooze button. Alarm clocks for kids is a good tool in providing a child to learn how to tell time. However, they can also teach a child to manage time.

There are quite a variety of kids’ radios on the market today, and inexpensive. To name a few they are Tweety, Hello Kitty, Emerson, Telemania, and Disney.

You can set the alarm on your child’s radio to go off at a certain time to prepare him, or her, to wake up, go to sleep, time for meals, take a nap, etc.

It is wonderful to know that nowadays kids are no longer awakened by shaking them, or by a loud whistle, or some other kind of item with a loud noise.

Sometimes waking up to music with an alarm clock radio can involve your child in the different forms of communication that a radio can provide. There are many radio programs for children, one of them being Radio Disney, which is a radio network located in Burbank, California. This station broadcasts music and other things for children and young teenagers.

Other stations include 60 seconds, Celebrity Take With Jake, Code Word of the Day, Family Portrait, Music Mailbag, Next Big Thing, Planet Premiere, Park Pop Question, Power Prize, Radio Rewind, and Saturday Night Move It Party.

These clock radios come in all colors and styles and it would not be hard to have your child select one that he or she will cherish. Kids like decorated clocks with pictures of characters and animals. Aside from this, they will brighten your child’s room.

Battery Operated Clocks 101

Battery operated clocks are rather popular versions of the traditional alarm clocks which have been in existence for a long time now. Their origins come from the 19th Century when the first clocks with dioxide silicone and quartz have been made. While nowadays atomic clocks are all the rage, there are still many people who love these traditional types that work with a battery.

The mechanism behind these types is very simple yet quite advanced. Also these watches are constructed to save space and power. Each of these clocks have small quartz particles that are at the core of them functioning properly. The main property of quartz in them is the fact that when you pass a small electric current through it, it will vibrate either a fixed number of timed per second or with a particular fixed frequency. This allows proper measurement and display of the time in every clock that is powered by batteries.

Nowadays the battery operated clocks come in several designs and styles and cater for many different budgets. Also you can easily get a complete set of features that make them also portable and easy to carry along. And the fact that they are energy saving, is a major plus with many people.

One of the traditional styles that is very popular nowadays is the regular round clock design that has 2 big brass bells on the top. I even remember my mom having one of these earlier when I was a kid. Those types used to be very loud though, however nowadays manufacturers make them with a nicer and smoother sound for waking up.

When it comes to various non-traditional types, there are many you can go for. You can find either LED or LCD clocks. Basically LED (which stands for Light Emitting Diode) needs electricity and is available in strong colors such as bright red, amber or even green. You have to plug it in as it takes lots of power for it to work well. The LCD (also called Liquid Crystal Display) type is a true power saver and it’s very economical to function. The most power it takes is when you turn on the back light in the dark to see the time during the night.

There are many other types based on other criteria that you might want to look for, such as ones with temperature readouts, radio receivers, auto time adjustment and they all have batteries to work with. So when you are next looking to buy a new battery powered clock, check out the various functions, styles and designs and also don’t forget to look for best pricing options.

One of the most popular ones with people that have hearing problems are the various types of vibrating alarm clock, such as the hearing impaired alarm clock.

Digital Clocks – Do much more than just telling the time

Clocks are one of the few basic and major requirements in people’s lives. It is with the help of a clock that people reach the right place on the right time. If all the clocks stop working all on a sudden, the world will go haywire and if you do not schedule your life according to time everything might crumble instantly.

It is a custom as well as necessity to keep a clock in every room at home, in office and most of the other places. Previously, large grand father clocks were used but with evolving technology the clocks became smaller in size. These days clocks are available in every size and shape which usually run on battery.

With the advent of digital technology, digital clocks have been made available for common use. Today, digital clocks are used in most homes as they are excellent alarm clocks and offer several other information apart from the time. Moreover, digital clocks are available in convenient sizes and are easy to read.

Digital clocks are used in bedrooms, cars, offices and also as travel clocks. Digital clocks display date, day and time. Some digital clocks also allow the users to know the temperature and display the calendar. Digital clocks usually work on battery. Electricity powered digital clocks are also available.

Digital clocks with funny and lucrative displays have been made available for children. Some digital clocks are also known as radio digital clocks as they allow people to set nice music of their choice to be set as the alarm.
